Body Image Therapy for Women
Feel more comfortable in your body without making your worth depend on how it looks
Maybe a photo can change your mood for the rest of the day. You find yourself comparing your body to others, checking your appearance or waiting until you look different to wear certain clothes or enjoy being seen.
You may want to feel better about your body while also wanting to change it. Those feelings can exist together.
I work with women who want body image to take up less space in their lives. Together, we can explore what caring for your body looks like while building a sense of worth that extends beyond appearance.
When how you look shapes how you feel
Body image concerns can affect everyday decisions. You might avoid photographs, feel uncomfortable with intimacy or spend time choosing clothes that hide the parts of yourself you dislike.
Even when your body changes, the criticism may remain. You might reach a goal and immediately find something else to fix.
Therapy gives us space to understand those patterns and the messages behind them. We can explore how past experiences, comparison and perfectionism influence the way you see yourself today.
Your body is allowed to change
Perimenopause, menopause, aging and weight changes can leave you feeling unfamiliar to yourself. You may miss how your body looked or felt before, even while wanting to appreciate it now.
If you are using a GLP-1 medication, you may be adjusting to changes in your appearance or the way others respond to you. If you are not, the attention surrounding weight loss may bring up comparison or old insecurities.
There is room to talk honestly about those experiences without being pressured to feel positively about every change.
Acceptance can coexist with your goals
You can want to improve your health or change how you look while treating yourself with respect today. You can also choose to step away from pursuing weight loss.
Our work can help you explore what matters to you, recognize when shame is shaping your choices and develop expectations that leave room for living your life.
You do not need to love every part of your body before you can care for it.
How we can work together
I bring more than 20 years of experience in health, wellness, fitness and behavior change to my work as a therapist. My own experience with body image and perimenopause also shapes the curiosity and care I bring to these conversations.
Together, we may work on reducing body checking and comparison, responding differently to self criticism, setting boundaries around body comments and returning to activities you have been putting off.
If food guilt or emotional eating is also part of your experience, we can address those connections. You can learn more on my Emotional Eating page.
